STREET CHILDREN TOO HAVE POTENTIALS
As the world was
celebrating the day of the African child, I had a chance to meet two street
children along Mburu Gichua road in Nakuru. And listening to these young
people, I came to realize that they too do have dreams like other children
despite the bleak future they face.
The more I spent time with them, more I liked them to the
extent of sharing pop corns with them. Contrary to what many people think,
these street children were very much social and intelligent. And I profoundly
believe given conducive environment these wonderful children can become
whatever they want to be. They too have potentials just like other children.
With much effort from the society in future.
On that very day, the sun was shining above Nakuru skyline
and I kept wondering will there be a day when the sun will find these splendid
children in a better place where they can pursue their dreams? Will their
future being a continuation of their past?
Anyone walking in the streets of Nakuru, Nairobi , Mombasa
and Kisumu will see these street children sniffing glue. And most of us have
formed perception that they belong to the street. What we are forgetting is
that they are children just like other children. Only that circumstances
compelled them to the life they are living.
Lastly, I am appealing to the government, religious leaders
and the society at large. Let us give these gorgeous children the kind of life
we would like to give to our children. If only the society is ready to help the
street children, I am very much sure they will never wallow in the world of
hopelessness.
